The NSW Community Rugby Leagues Association (NSWCRLA) recently held its General Members Meeting at the Parramatta Rugby League Centre of Excellence, bringing together District League representatives from across NSW and the ACT.

The session focused on sharing challenges, highlighting what is working well across the State, and informing the ongoing development of the draft NSWCRLA Strategic Plan 2026–2029.
A clear message emerged throughout the day: long-term sustainability in Community Rugby League is driven by experience, culture and support, not participation numbers alone. Districts highlighted common pressures around volunteer workload, referee retention, facilities, governance and competition from other sports, while also sharing many practical examples of positive local initiatives.
Examples of good practice discussed included:
Coach development and clear player pathways supporting retention
Stronger communication with families using digital platforms
Volunteer and referee support models reducing burnout
Practical approaches to child safety and concussion education
Innovative use of technology and multimedia to improve engagement.
Members also received updates from NSW Rugby League and discussed the importance of early communication, consistency and collaboration across the community game.
